Nottingham and Nottinghamshire ICB
Over 8 million GP practice appointments were provided in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire in 2025 – the highest ever on record, and a quarter of million more than in 2024.
New GP Access Data published by NHS England shows that out of the total 8.1 million appointments in 2025, 3.3m of those were with a GP. The remainder were with other members of the general practice team including clinical pharmacists, physiotherapists, mental health practitioners, nursing associates and dieticians.
The number of appointments provided on the same day as booking rose from 3,286,002 (41%) in 2024 to 3,465,207 (42%) in 2025. And the number of appointments within 14 days of booking, typically for non-urgent or management of on-going health conditions, also increased, from 81.4% to 85.3%.
There was a slight decrease in the number of face-to-face appointments in 2025 – falling to 5,362,884 from 5,405,097 in 2024 – as more patients opted for telephone and online appointments, when appropriate.
Meanwhile, patients did not attend 311,238 (3.84%) appointments, with a cost to the NHS of approximately £9.3 million, (based on an average cost of £30 per appointment).
GP practices have been making improvements to help people get their care they need, when they need it. These include the introduction of new cloud-based telephony to manage appointment requests, website improvements, care navigation training, new online consultation features and extending the use of the NHS app to request appointments and order prescriptions.
Dr Dave Briggs, Executive Director of Outcomes (Medical) paid tribute to GPs and practice staff for their continued had work in the face of increasing demand for appointments. He said: “Thank you to all our general practice colleagues for delivering a record number of appointments last year.
“The number of appointments available in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire has risen every year since the pandemic, which is testament to the hard work of our practice teams and the way they have implemented and adapted to new ways to tackle the 8am rush and boost access to appointments.
“There are more ways than ever to contact your practice. You can use your GP’s online system for non-urgent queries, and you should get a response that working day. Many GP practices also have the facility for patients to request or cancel appointments using the NHS App.”
NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire provided an additional £500,000 to Primary Care Networks (groups of local GP practices working together with other health and social care services) in funding for more GP appointments this winter.
The funding has given patients more timely access to primary care appointments and helped reduce further pressure on urgent and emergency care services, especially during the peak demand for primary care associated with respiratory illness (December and January).
