Patient Participation Groups (PPGs)

A Patient Participation Group (PPG) is a group of people who volunteer to work with their GP practice to help it work as well as it can for patients and staff.

Your experiences as a patient, carer or friend matter and you can bring different ideas to help improve how your GP practice runs in some way.

To get involved with your local PPG, just ask your GP practice.

National Patient Participation Week 3 – 9 June 2024

National Patient Participation Week is an annual event which is supported by the National Association for Patient Participation (NAPP). It aims to raise awareness about the importance of patient participation in healthcare. During this awareness week patients, professionals and organisations are encouraged to share their experiences and they are also empowered to be active participants in their healthcare journey.

PPGs help to develop projects to meet the needs of patients and encourage activities and events within the practice whilst understanding the challenges practices can face.

To find out more about National Patient Participation Week please visit www.napp.org.uk, or contact your surgery directly if you are interested in joining your local Patient Participation Group.

Development Workshop

On Tuesday 28 February 2023 the NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Board hosted a development workshop on recruiting to and maintaining an effective Patient Participation Group. You can watch the development workshop Youtube video now or view the slides from the session.

Here is a toolkit to assist you when setting up a PPG. A PPG promotion poster and a PPG promotion flyer is also available to help GP practices.
