Nottingham and Nottinghamshire ICB
A service provided by community pharmacies is helping people get oral contraception more easily without having to see their GP.
Over the past 12 months, community pharmacies in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire delivered 19,195 oral contraception consultations, making contraception more accessible and convenient.
The service is part of the national Pharmacy First scheme, which allows people to receive advice and treatment for seven common conditions, as well as oral contraception, without needing a GP appointment or prescription.
People can start or continue the contraceptive pill via a confidential consultation with a trained pharmacist, in a private room.
And a new addition to the service means that people can also get the emergency hormonal contraception – also known as the morning after pill – from most pharmacies.
Emma Anderson, Community Pharmacist from Evans Pharmacy in East Leake, said: “We have enjoyed offering the pharmacy contraception service to provide oral contraception at a range of convenient times.
“As experts in medicines, we are pleased to support people with contraception, including managing any side effects. We are delighted that emergency contraception is now included in this service to improve access for those who might need this.”
